What is BS EN 1090?
BS EN 1090 covers the fabrication of structural steel and aluminium components. Part 1 sets out how components are assessed and marked, Part 2 covers the technical requirements for steel and Part 3 for aluminium. To place structural components on the market, fabricators need a Factory Production Control (FPC) system assessed by an approved or notified body. Once certified, you can UKCA or CE mark your components (as applicable) and issue a Declaration of Performance. Work is carried out to an execution class, from EXC1 to EXC4, depending on the consequences of failure. SBMS supports fabricators working to EXC1 and EXC2, which cover most building and general structural steelwork.
Who needs it?
- Steel fabricators supplying frames, beams, columns, portal frames and trusses
- Fabricators of staircases, balconies, mezzanines, canopies and walkways
- Aluminium fabricators producing structural components
- Fabricators whose customers or main contractors are asking for UKCA or CE marked steelwork
Business benefits
How SBMS helps
- Gap analysisWe confirm whether EXC1 or EXC2 applies to your work and review your workshop, welding and records against BS EN 1090.
- DocumentationWe write your FPC manual and procedures, including traceability, inspection, calibration, and templates for your Declaration of Performance and marking.
- ImplementationWe help you arrange welding procedure (BS EN ISO 15614-1) and welder (BS EN ISO 9606-1) qualification testing through an accredited test body, and put welding coordination to BS EN ISO 14731 in place, through a suitably qualified member of your team or an external welding coordinator.
- Internal auditWe audit your FPC system and a live job from order to delivery.
- Certification supportWe prepare you for the approved body's initial assessment and help close any findings.
- Ongoing maintenanceWe support you through surveillance visits and keep procedures and qualifications in date.
Typical timescales
Typically three to six months. The main variable is welding procedure qualification, which depends on test fabrication and test body turnaround. We'll plan this early so it doesn't hold up your assessment.
